How I Painted This Buddha in Acrylics — Step by Step
This Buddha painting is one of my favorite pieces — it combines spiritual symbolism with bold color choices and detailed brushwork. In this post, I'll walk you through how I created it from start to finish.
1. Concept and Composition
I wanted to capture the essence of peace and enlightenment. The Buddha figure represents serenity, while the dove symbolizes freedom and hope. I chose a vibrant red background to create contrast with the cool tones of the Buddha's face — red also holds deep spiritual significance in many Asian cultures.
The Sanskrit calligraphy in the background adds texture and cultural depth without distracting from the central figure.
2. Sketching the Outline
I started with a light pencil sketch directly on the canvas, focusing on getting the proportions of the face right — the half-closed eyes, the serene expression, and the traditional ushnisha (the raised bump on top of the head). The dove was sketched in a dynamic flying pose to add movement to the composition.
3. Building the Background
Using a large flat brush, I laid down the red background in multiple thin layers. I mixed cadmium red with a touch of burnt sienna to get a warm, rich tone. The Sanskrit text was painted with a thin round brush using slightly darker shades, creating a subtle layered effect.
4. Painting the Buddha
For the Buddha's face, I used a monochromatic approach with cool grays, blue-greens, and whites. This creates a stone-like quality while contrasting beautifully against the warm red background. Key techniques I used:
- Dry brushing for the textured hair curls
- Glazing with transparent blue-green for depth in the shadows
- Highlighting with pure white mixed with a tiny amount of yellow for warmth
5. The Dove — Bringing It to Life
The dove was painted with a mix of greens and warm tones, giving it an almost iridescent quality. I paid special attention to the wing feathers, using individual brushstrokes to create a sense of texture and movement. The spread wings create a visual bridge between the Buddha and the background.
6. Final Details and Refinement
The last stage involved refining edges, deepening shadows, and adding the orange/gold draping on the Buddha's shoulder. I also added the circular halo behind the head using a lighter shade of red with white, creating a subtle glow effect.
